In today’s world there is a growing desire to understand;   (1) where “our” food is coming from and; (2) how sustainable agriculture plays a vital role in local, regional and national production of safe food.

In New York State, agriculture and tourism are two leading economic sectors in the State’s economy. Agri-Tourism is a beneficial combination of these two sectors which offers growth and enrichment opportunities for both the community and the States agricultural industry.

By promoting increased awareness and a personalized appreciation of agriculture, Agri-Tourism is evolving into a common link between the public and modern day agriculture. Agri-Tourism has become a “real” avenue for the public to learn and experience the importance of agriculture first hand by visiting active agricultural, horticultural, and innovative agribusinesses to further this learning and educational experience.

Worm Power...

The Agri-Tourism Grant Program provided by the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets provides support to allow agricultural businesses, the opportunity to open their doors to the public and further the Agri-Tourism experience. Worm Power was one of 51 recipients of this program. Worm Power operates a state of the art production facility that transforms agricultural wastes into environmentally and consumer friendly organic plant and soil production products in a process (which utilizes over 9 millions earthworms) that people find very compelling and environmentally friendly. Tours of the Worm Power facility offer an outstanding opportunity to educate the public on what production agriculture is doing to ensure it remains a good environmental steward and neighbor through utilizing alternative farm practices such as vermicomposting.

This website is intended to further the importance of NYS Agri-Tourism by; (1) providing information on active Agri-Tours throughout the State, (2) provide information on tour events being hosted at the Worm Power Facility and (3) provide a virtual online tour of Worm Powers unique earthworm composting operations for those that cannot physically visit the Worm Power facility.
